Walk the rarely visited ruins of Copalita — an ancient Zapotec ceremonial city overlooking the Pacific — with a certified archaeologist guide who brings its 1,500-year history vividly to life. This is Huatulco's most intellectually rewarding and crowd-free cultural encounter.
What to expect
The park sits at the mouth of the Copalita River, just 15 minutes from the cruise terminal, making this an effortlessly timed excursion. Your guide leads you through a hilltop ceremonial precinct with pyramid-temples, a well-preserved ball court, and a lighthouse-side viewpoint with sweeping Pacific panoramas. A small on-site museum houses Zapotec ceramics, jade artefacts and a bilingual timeline of the site's occupation from 900 BCE to the Spanish conquest. The whole experience concludes at a riverside palapa for fresh coconut water.
