Descend on foot into Mafate — Réunion's roadless, UNESCO-listed cirque — with a private expert guide who knows every ridge and Creole hamlet. This is one of the most isolated inhabited landscapes on Earth, and you'll have it almost entirely to yourselves.
What to expect
The trail descends from Dos d'Âne, just 25 minutes from the port, into a cirque enclosed by 1,000-metre basalt walls draped in tree-ferns and ylang-ylang. Your guide introduces you to Creole farmers whose families have lived here for generations, entirely cut off from roads and modernity. The ascent back rewards you with sweeping views over the Indian Ocean. Expect 3–4 hours of moderate hiking on well-marked trails.
Good to know
Trailhead at Dos d'Âne is ~25 min by taxi from La Possession port — arrange a return pick-up time. Wear trail shoes and bring 1.5 L of water; the guide provides poles if needed. Book at least a week in advance for a private slot. A half-day format leaves generous buffer before all-aboard.
