The Tides Institute is one of coastal Maine's most serious and surprising art institutions — a vast archive and gallery occupying a landmark 1887 building, dedicated to the art and culture of the Quoddy region. A private curator-led tour unlocks exhibition spaces and archive rooms rarely seen by the public.
What to expect
The institute occupies a magnificent waterfront building filled with rotating exhibitions of contemporary and historic art alongside a remarkable regional archive. The curator connects the visual art to the lived history of Passamaquoddy Bay — the fishing economy, the Wabanaki peoples, the US-Canada borderland culture. Upstairs, archive drawers open to reveal 19th-century charts, rare photographs, and handwritten ship logs.
