Walk the sacred grounds of the 'Queen of the California Missions,' a 1786 Franciscan masterpiece still in active use — its twin-bell towers, lavender gardens, and frescoed cemetery are hauntingly beautiful.
What to expect
Begin in the original stone fountain courtyard before moving through the restored church, its polychrome reredos glowing in filtered California light. The on-site cemetery, one of the oldest in the American West, tells the story of colonial California through carved stone. The rose and lavender gardens are immaculately maintained and deeply serene.
Good to know
The Mission sits 1.5 miles from the pier — a short rideshare or a scenic uphill walk. Allow 1.5–2 hours. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered) as it is an active parish. Pre-purchase tickets online to skip the entry queue.
