Go behind the velvet rope at one of America's finest maritime museums, with a private curator-guided walk through lightships, rescue craft, and the terrifying story of the Columbia River Bar — the 'Graveyard of the Pacific.'
What to expect
You are met at the entrance of this stunning riverfront museum by a staff curator who tailors the experience to your interests — whether that's the mechanics of the Columbia Bar Pilots, the haunting wreck collection, or the fully intact lightship Columbia moored outside. The 37,000-square-foot facility houses an astounding breadth of Pacific maritime history, from Indigenous canoe culture to modern Coast Guard heroics. The adjacent outdoor deck offers sweeping views of the Columbia River and the two-mile Astoria-Megler Bridge. Allow at least 90 minutes for a leisurely private session.
Good to know
The museum is a short, flat walk or trolley ride along the riverfront from the cruise pier — extremely convenient for port days. Book a private curator session by emailing the museum well in advance of your sailing date. General admission tickets can be purchased at the door, but private sessions require advance arrangement.
