Stand inside the reconstructed Fort Clatsop where Lewis & Clark's Corps of Discovery spent the winter of 1805–06, guided privately through the living-history site that marks the western terminus of one of America's greatest journeys.
What to expect
Your private interpreter leads you through the canopied forest trail to the reconstructed fort, narrating the Corps' extraordinary 8,000-mile round trip and the brutal, rain-soaked winter they endured here. Inside the fort's low-ceilinged rooms, the interpreter reads aloud from the original journals, conjuring the smell of tallow candles and smoked elk. The surrounding old-growth forest feels genuinely remote and cinematic. A short detour to the Netul River landing — where the dugout canoes were cached — adds an evocative final chapter to the story.
Good to know
Fort Clatsop is approximately 5 miles from Astoria's pier — a 10-minute drive or easily arranged private car. Allow 2–3 hours for a full private experience. The park is open year-round; arrive early on cruise-ship days to enjoy it before day-trippers arrive. Book private interpretive programs well in advance through the park's visitor services office.
