Walk the dramatic headland trails of Fishing Point Municipal Park to the iconic red-and-white lighthouse — a clifftop perch where humpback whales surface in the bay below and icebergs parade past the point. One of the most photogenic walks in Atlantic Canada.
What to expect
The trail system winds through boreal coastal heath to the Fox Point Lighthouse, perched above crashing Atlantic surf. Interpretive panels explain the ecology of the Labrador Current, and benches are perfectly placed for whale-watching without binoculars. The Santana Trail climbs 476 steps to panoramic views over the entire bay — a satisfying workout rewarded with one of Newfoundland's finest vistas. Wildflowers, bald eagles, and the smell of salt spray accompany every step.
Good to know
The park entrance is approximately a 15-minute walk from the cruise pier — flat and easy. Allow 1.5–2 hours for the lighthouse loop; add an hour for the Santana Trail climb. Wear sturdy walking shoes; the trails are well-maintained but rocky in sections. No pre-booking required — simply walk in.
