Visit Carlos Páez Vilaró's legendary whitewashed cliff-top sanctuary — part studio, part museum, part hotel — and stay for the magical sunset ritual that draws luminaries from across the globe.
What to expect
Casapueblo rises above Punta Ballena like a Mediterranean dream sculpted by hand — every curve, every wall was shaped personally by the celebrated Uruguayan artist. The museum rooms display Vilaró's vivid paintings, sculptures, and the extraordinary story of his son's survival in the Andes crash of 1972 (the inspiration for the film 'Alive'). Wander at your own pace through labyrinthine white corridors before settling on the panoramic terrace with a signature Medio y Medio cocktail. As the sun drops, a staff member reads the poetic dedication to the light — one of South America's most moving travel rituals.
Good to know
Casapueblo is 12 km west of Punta del Este; arrange a private transfer or taxi (approx. 20 min). The sunset ritual is the highlight — time your visit for late afternoon. Check your ship's all-aboard time carefully; sunset in austral summer is around 8 pm, which may be tight. A daytime visit to the museum alone is also deeply worthwhile.
