Watch a boisterous sea lion colony bask at the working port, then climb the peninsula's 19th-century lighthouse for sweeping 360° views where the Atlantic meets the Río de la Plata.
What to expect
Punta del Este's working fishing port harbours a thriving, permanently resident colony of South American sea lions (lobos marinos), lounging on the docks with magnificent indifference to human admirers. Your expert naturalist guide explains their social behaviour and seasonal patterns before leading you on foot through the narrow streets of the historic peninsula — the oldest part of the city, lined with elegant early 20th-century villas. The 1877 lighthouse stands at the very tip, and the climb rewards you with a dazzling panorama: to one side the wild Playa Brava, to the other the calm Playa Mansa, and the vast estuary stretching towards Buenos Aires. Finish with a coffee on Gorlero Avenue, the resort's elegant main promenade.
Good to know
This is one of the most walkable and rewarding self-guided or small-group experiences in port. The lighthouse and port are both within 1.5 km of the pier. The sea lions are present year-round. Wear comfortable walking shoes and sunscreen. All-aboard is easily manageable.
