Step inside an immaculately preserved 1860s lumber baron's mansion, guided by expert historical docents in an intimate small-group setting. One of the finest Victorian interiors in the Upper Midwest.
What to expect
The Hixon House has been meticulously preserved rather than restored, meaning original wallpapers, carpets, and furnishings remain exactly as the family left them — an almost eerie step back to Gilded Age prosperity. Knowledgeable LCHS docents lead groups of no more than 10–15 through the parlors, library, and bedrooms, weaving in the story of La Crosse's lumber boom and the Hixon family's outsized influence on the city. The Turkish-inspired sitting room and original Eastlake woodwork are particular highlights. The intimate pace allows for questions and close-up appreciation of rare decorative details.
