Ride the world's steepest and shortest funicular railway — a Dubuque icon operating since 1882 — for a breathtaking 189-foot ascent to panoramic views of three states and the Mississippi River valley below.
What to expect
Two cozy wooden cable cars counterbalance each other up a dramatically steep bluff track, covering 296 feet of track in under a minute. At the top, a beautifully maintained observation deck opens onto a sweeping 180-degree view of the Mississippi River, Eagle Point, and the Illinois bluffs beyond. The mechanism itself — still largely original — is a marvel of Victorian ingenuity worth studying up close. The round-trip takes under 20 minutes, making it an effortless addition to any itinerary.
