A short but magnificent hike through Hattebergsdalen canyon leads to Hattebergsfossen — a multi-tiered waterfall that plunges in a roaring white curtain through ancient, moss-draped rock. One of Hardangerfjord's most dramatic natural spectacles.
What to expect
The path follows the Hattebergselva river upstream through a narrow, cathedral-like gorge where towering rock walls are blanketed in luminous green moss. The sound of the falls builds gradually before the full cascade reveals itself — crashing into a pool surrounded by ancient stone. The mist is tangible and the light, especially on sunny days, refracts into fleeting rainbows. A wooden viewing bridge puts you as close to the torrent as you dare.
Good to know
Hattebergsdalen is approximately 15 minutes by taxi from the cruise quay. The walk to the main falls takes 30–45 minutes each way — very manageable with time to spare. Trail can be slippery; wear gripped footwear. Open year-round. An excellent pairing with a Baroniet Rosendal visit for a full port day.
