La Piscinita ('the little pool') is a sheltered rocky inlet on San Andrés' western shore where crystal-clear water, coral heads, and a dazzling parade of reef fish create a natural aquarium accessible from the shore — no boat required. Pair it with a walk to Rocky Cay, a postcard islet just offshore.
What to expect
Your guide leads you to the western shoreline where volcanic rock has created a series of sheltered pools open to the sea. Slip in and within seconds you're surrounded by entire schools of blue tang and sergeant major fish barely an arm's length away. After snorkeling, stroll five minutes along the shore to Rocky Cay — wade the shallow sandbar at low tide to reach its shaded beach and look back at San Andrés town framed by coconut palms. It's one of those 'pinch yourself' Caribbean tableaux. A local seafood shack nearby serves ceviche and patacones to round off the morning.
Good to know
Best visited in the morning when water clarity is highest and light hits the pools at a dramatic angle. The site is on the island's less-trafficked western side — factor 20 minutes by taxi or buggy from the cruise pier. Entry is informal (no formal gate fee); a local guide adds context and safety. Bring water shoes — the volcanic rock edges are sharp.
