Coquimbo sits in the Atacama's southern halo — one of the world's top two stargazing regions. At Mamalluca or Pangue Observatory, a certified astronomer turns a professional telescope on nebulae, star clusters, and planets invisible to northern-hemisphere eyes.
What to expect
A 4WD transfer ascends the dark hillside above La Serena to the observatory, arriving at dusk. Your astronomer begins with the naked-eye orientation — the Magellanic Clouds, the Southern Cross — before moving to twin computerised telescopes. You observe Jupiter's moons, the Eta Carinae nebula, and globular clusters in real time, with astrophotography guidance available on request. Hot herbal tea and local sweets are served under the open dome.
Good to know
Sessions typically begin after sunset — verify your ship's all-aboard time is late enough. Book at least 2 weeks in advance; private sessions sell out. Wear warm layers and bring a red-light torch.
