Board a zodiac-style vessel to Isla Damas inside the Humboldt Penguin National Reserve — a UNESCO-candidate marine sanctuary where penguins, sea otters, dolphins, and (seasonally) blue whales share crystalline waters. One of South America's great wildlife spectacles.
What to expect
Transfer north along the Pan-American Highway to Punta de Choros, where a licensed zodiac departs for the reserve. En route you scan for Chilean dolphins riding the bow wave and bottle-nosed dolphins; the boat pauses at sea-lion colonies on offshore islets. On Isla Damas you walk a short guided trail past nesting Humboldt penguins — so accustomed to visitors you can photograph them at arm's length — and observe Peruvian pelicans and red-legged cormorants overhead. The return journey hugs the coastline for seascape photography.
