Hike Kaohsiung's wild green ridge — Shoushan Nature Reserve — where troops of Formosan macaques roam free above a city of 2.7 million. Summit viewpoints deliver jaw-dropping panoramas over the entire harbour and the Taiwan Strait.
What to expect
Your local guide leads you up shaded limestone trails through dense subtropical forest, where wild macaques can be observed at close range in their natural habitat — foraging, grooming and leaping between strangler figs. Coral fossils embedded in the rock tell a 200,000-year geological story. The summit ridge opens to a sweeping panoramic view across Kaohsiung Port, Cijin Island and out to the glittering Taiwan Strait. The descent passes a Qing Dynasty fort for a dash of history.
Good to know
Park is free and open daily; private guide pre-booking is essential for wildlife expertise and safe macaque etiquette. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring water and sunscreen. Trailhead is a 10-minute taxi from the cruise pier. Best in the morning when macaques are most active; allow 3–4 hours.
