Step inside Jeddah's living UNESCO World Heritage Site — a labyrinth of 400-year-old coral-stone tower houses, intricately carved Roshan balconies, and hidden courtyards that tell the story of Arabia's greatest merchant city.
What to expect
Your guide meets you at the historic Bab Makkah city gate and leads you through Al-Balad's atmospheric lanes, pausing at the Nassif House Museum — where the Hejazi elite once hosted the first king of Saudi Arabia — and the ornate Al-Sharbatly House. You'll sip cardamom-spiced Arabic coffee poured by a local merchant and browse the old souq stalls draped in frankincense smoke. The finale is a rooftop vantage point over the roofscape of carved wooden Roshans, one of the most photogenic views in the Arabian Peninsula.
Good to know
Al-Balad is roughly 10–15 minutes by taxi from the cruise terminal. The tour runs approximately 4 hours, comfortably within most all-aboard windows. Pre-book your private guide well in advance as availability is limited. Dress modestly (shoulders and knees covered); abayas for women are no longer mandatory but are respectful. Best done in the morning before midday heat.
