Immerse yourself in the ancient frankincense trade at Salalah's atmospheric Al Haffa Souk — the most authentic in southern Oman — before a private guided visit to the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a masterwork of Islamic architecture.
What to expect
Al Haffa Souk is the beating heart of Dhofari culture: a warren of stalls piled with raw frankincense resin in a dozen grades, silver Bedouin jewellery, rose water, and hand-woven textiles. Your guide introduces you to the vendors by name, explains the ancient grading system for luban (frankincense), and ensures you buy with confidence rather than guesswork. The adjacent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque is a serene masterpiece of white marble, with one of Arabia's largest hand-knotted carpets and a chandelier of Swarovski crystal — breathtaking in its scale and craftsmanship. The two experiences together capture the spiritual and mercantile soul of Salalah.
Good to know
Mosque visits require modest dress (shoulders and knees covered; scarves for women). The mosque is closed to non-Muslims during Friday prayer — check timing with your guide. Al Haffa Souk is most vibrant in the morning. Allow 3–4 hours for both experiences. Frankincense makes an exquisite, lightweight souvenir — your guide will help you select premium grades.
