Stand on the observation terraces of the new Agua Clara Locks as Neopanamax vessels — longer than the Empire State Building — squeeze through with centimetres to spare. Combine with historic Gatun Locks for the complete locks story in a single morning.
What to expect
A bilingual guide meets you at the visitor centre, where interactive exhibits reveal the canal's construction and expansion. You then step onto the open observation deck as a massive container ship or LNG tanker glides through — the scale is almost incomprehensible at this distance. A short drive brings you to the original Gatun Locks, still in daily operation, where the contrast with the new locks is striking. The morning ends with panoramic views over Gatun Lake from the lock walls.
Good to know
Located on the Atlantic (Colón) side — ideal if your ship docks at Colón. Allow 3–4 hours. Comfortable shoes and sun protection essential; the terraces are fully exposed. Book a private guide through Panama Road Trips or a similar local operator to maximise access and commentary.
