Explore the dramatic Spanish colonial fortress of Fort San Lorenzo — a UNESCO World Heritage Site perched above the Caribbean jungle — then descend to the Chagres River mouth where conquistadors, pirates, and canal engineers all left their mark.
What to expect
A private guide collects you at the Colón terminal and drives through the protected rainforest of the Chagres National Park to the clifftop fort. Walking the crumbling 16th-century battlements above the point where the Chagres meets the Caribbean, the sense of history is palpable — this was the target of Henry Morgan's 1671 raid. Your guide brings the fort's layered past to life, from Spanish galleon defences to American radar installations. The drive back through jungle teeming with birds and butterflies is a delight in itself.
Good to know
Allow 4–5 hours including transport from Colón. Roads into the national park are rough in places; a 4WD vehicle is used. Wear sturdy shoes, bring insect repellent and a hat. Confirm the tour returns at least 90 minutes before all-aboard time.
