Ascend the only active volcano on mainland Europe with a certified volcanologist who reads the crater's geology like a living textbook. Stand at the smoking rim of the caldera that buried Pompeii and peer 300 metres into the abyss.
What to expect
The 30-minute trail from the car park at 1,000 m winds through lunar lava fields carpeted with pioneering wildflowers. Your guide points out obsidian flows from different eruption centuries, explains how the 79 AD plinian column reached 33 km high, and shows you the steam vents still exhaling sulphurous gases. On a clear day the panorama sweeps the entire Bay of Naples. The summit is cool and windy even in summer.
Good to know
