What to expect
You descend 20 metres below modern street level into a ghostly neighbourhood: a tavern with the wine menu still painted on the wall, the College of the Augustali with luminous frescoes, and the boathouses on the ancient shoreline where 300 citizens waited in vain for rescue. Your guide brings specific residents to life — the slaves, the merchants, the soldiers — making the human tragedy viscerally real. Fewer than 800 metres of streets to walk; this is quality over quantity.
Good to know
Ercolano Scavi station is 20 min from Naples by Circumvesuviana — same line as Pompeii, earlier stop. Combine both sites in one day or do Herculaneum as a focused 2-hour deep-dive. Site is open 09:00–19:30 (last entry 18:00) April–October. Arrive early; afternoon heat in summer is intense.
