Explore the hauntingly beautiful ruins of a 19th-century copper mine perched on Virgin Gorda's wild Atlantic cliffs, then snorkel the protected reefs of the island's quiet East End. Culture, drama, and marine life in a single private half-day with a BVI heritage guide.
What to expect
Your private transfer (ferry from Road Town to Virgin Gorda, then jeep) winds to the eastern tip of the island, where chimney stacks and engine-house ruins crown a dramatic headland. Waves crash sixty feet below as your guide narrates the mine's history — Spanish copper extraction from the 1500s, then the British attempt to revive it in the 1800s. It is spectacularly atmospheric. The afternoon reef snorkel in calm, sheltered East End bays rewards you with coral gardens, spotted drum fish, and the quiet that comes from being genuinely off the tourist trail.
Good to know
Allow 4–5 hours including the ferry from Road Town (accessed via water taxi from Great Harbour). This excursion requires careful timing against your all-aboard — ideally suited to an early departure. Wear sturdy shoes for the mine site (uneven volcanic rock). Private jeep transfers on Virgin Gorda can be arranged via the ferry terminal at Spanish Town.
