Descend into one of the largest Nazi submarine bunkers ever built, right in Lorient's harbour — a monumental, haunting relic of WWII. With a private historian guide, the story comes alive in extraordinary depth.
What to expect
The Keroman Submarine Base (Lorient La Base) is a UNESCO-listed complex of colossal reinforced-concrete pens built by the Nazis between 1941 and 1942 to shelter the deadly Atlantic U-boat fleet. Walking its cathedral-like interior with a private guide is a spine-tingling experience — the sheer scale of the engineering and the weight of history are overwhelming. You'll also visit the Flore submarine, a Cold War-era French Navy vessel preserved in extraordinary detail, boarding her to explore the cramped torpedo rooms and officers' quarters. The combination makes for one of Brittany's most viscerally memorable experiences.
Good to know
Lorient La Base is walkable from the cruise pier — roughly 15 minutes on foot or a 5-minute taxi. Pre-book the Flore submarine visit separately at lorientlabase.com if you prefer to combine self-guided and private elements. Wear flat, sturdy shoes inside the submarine.
