Join a small-boat dolphin-spotting excursion in the warm channels off Kizimkazi — home to resident pods of bottlenose and humpback dolphins — then sail back to Stone Town on a traditional dhow as the sky ignites over the Indian Ocean at sunset.
What to expect
The early-morning run south to Kizimkazi takes you past fishing villages where hand-painted boats are still being painted with traditional geometric patterns. In the water, bottlenose dolphins spiral curiously around snorkellers in water so clear you can see 15 metres to the sandy bottom. Your guide reads the pod's mood before every entry — patient, respectful, extraordinary. The optional sunset dhow back to Stone Town turns the return journey into a golden hour moment: sails billowing, the old town glowing amber, a cold drink in hand.
Good to know
Kizimkazi is ~55 km from Stone Town — allow 60–75 minutes by private transfer (approx. USD 40–50 round trip). Dolphin sightings are not guaranteed but the resident pods make encounters very consistent year-round. Early departure (07:00–07:30) is essential to reach dolphins before other boats. Confirm all-aboard time carefully; allow generous buffer for the return drive.
