Sail to the legendary Jazirat al Maqlab — Telegraph Island — where Victorian-era British engineers once laid the Indo-European telegraph cable, swimming and snorkeling in the same impossibly clear waters that drove those engineers to coin the phrase 'going 'round the bend'.
What to expect
Your dhow weaves through narrow fjord channels flanked by burnt-ochre mountains before reaching the tiny, historically charged island in the heart of Khor Sham. A guide shares the extraordinary tale of the 1860s British telegraph engineers who lived here in punishing heat — 'going round the bend' entered the English language on this very shore. Dolphins are almost guaranteed en route. Snorkeling off the island reveals parrotfish, angelfish, and vivid coral. A traditional Omani lunch of grilled fish, rice, and mezze is served on deck.
Good to know
Half-day departures run 08:30–12:30 or 13:00–17:00, fitting neatly around all-aboard. The marina is 5–10 minutes by taxi from the port. Book in advance — departures with a knowledgeable English-speaking guide fill quickly. Wear water shoes; the island's shore is rocky.
