Venture into a rare, otherworldly cloud forest perched on Hualālai Volcano — a lush, misty ecosystem of ancient ferns, endemic birds, and native Hawaiian plants found nowhere else on Earth.
What to expect
Your guide opens a world hidden above the tourist coastline: towering tree ferns, native ʻōhiʻa lehua blossoms, and the songs of endemic honeycreepers drift through the cool mist. The 2.5-hour walk traverses multiple micro-habitats, from open lava fields to dense montane forest, with frequent stops for botanical identification and cultural context from pre-contact Hawaiian land use. The temperature is a refreshing contrast to the coast below. Groups are intentionally tiny, ensuring an intimate, unhurried pace.
Good to know
Tours depart from the sanctuary's private entrance in the Kona highlands — approximately 25–30 minutes from Kona pier by taxi. Wear closed-toe shoes and bring a light layer; the cloud forest is noticeably cooler and can be misty. Book directly through the sanctuary website well in advance as group size is strictly limited.
