Sit with a master Marquesan tattoo artist for a private studio session — either to receive an authentic hand-tapped design or to witness the ancient craft up close — and leave with custom tapa cloth art and deep insight into one of Polynesia's most storied living traditions.
What to expect
Your session begins with a one-on-one consultation in the artist's studio in Taiohae, where you discuss lineage, values, and the symbolic vocabulary of Marquesan design — spirals for strength, tiki eyes for protection, ocean waves for journey. For those receiving ink, the hand-tap technique (using a comb tool and natural pigment, or modern machine for the uninitiated) is both meditative and deeply meaningful. Observers can participate in a tapa-cloth stamping workshop, creating a wearable or frameable piece using traditional bark-cloth and hand-carved stamps. The artist explains each symbol's origin in oral history and connects it to the stone tikis visible from the studio window.
Good to know
Book your studio slot at least two weeks ahead via the Cannibal Art website or direct message — master artists take very limited appointments on port days. A tattoo session requires 1–3 hrs depending on size; the tapa workshop runs 90 mins. Aftercare products are provided. The studio is a short walk from the tender pier.
