Descend into millennia of Moche civilisation at the Temples of the Sun and Moon — two towering adobe pyramids that conceal layer upon layer of extraordinary polychrome murals. A private archaeologist-led visit here is one of the most remarkable cultural experiences on South America's Pacific coast.
What to expect
You arrive at the Huacas de Moche complex, dramatically set at the foot of Cerro Blanco, to find the Huaca de la Luna still yielding its secrets to archaeologists digging just metres from the public walkways. Your guide leads you through exposed ceremonial platforms revealing four successive building phases — each painted over the last like a palimpsest of faith and power. The on-site Museum of the Sacrifice provides grisly and fascinating context on Moche ritual, and from the upper platform the panorama across the coastal desert to the Pacific is extraordinary. The nearby village artisan market makes a worthy five-minute detour on the way back.
