Descend into the burial mound of Philip II of Macedon — Alexander the Great's father — and stand before gold-leaf crowns, priceless armour, and intact royal treasures in the Museum of the Royal Tombs at Aegae, the first capital of the Macedonian Kingdom.
What to expect
Your guide collects you at the port and transfers you in a private air-conditioned vehicle to Vergina, roughly 75 km south-west of Thessaloniki. Inside the Great Tumulus you enter the subterranean museum — one of Greece's most atmospheric — where royal tombs remain exactly as discovered by archaeologist Manolis Andronikos in 1977. Gold larnakes (caskets), an ivory-and-gold ceremonial shield, and a golden oak-leaf wreath command the space in near-reverent silence. Your guide contextualises Alexander's lineage and the Macedonian kingdom with scholarship that transforms artefacts into vivid narrative. The return journey allows a stop in Pella, the later Macedonian capital, to view its breathtaking floor mosaics before heading back to port.
