Stand at the foot of the mythological home of the Greek gods and walk the sacred sanctuary of Dion — the ancient Macedonians' holy city where Alexander the Great sacrificed before his Persian campaign — in one extraordinary full-day private journey.
What to expect
Departing Thessaloniki port, your private vehicle heads south along the coast toward the Pierian foothills where the silhouette of Mount Olympus — at 2,918 m Greece's highest peak — dominates the horizon. First stop is the Archaeological Park of Dion, the sanctuary where Macedonian kings worshipped Zeus and Artemis; excavated streets, a remarkably intact mosaic floor, and temples half-submerged in crystal-clear spring water create an atmosphere of genuine mystery. Your guide brings Alexander's pre-battle rituals and Macedonian religion vividly to life. After lunch at a local taverna in Litochoro village, you ascend by vehicle to the lower slopes of Olympus for a short scenic walk through black pine forest with views up to the Plateau of the Muses — no technical climbing required. The light on the peak on a clear day is breathtaking.
Good to know
Dion is approximately 90 km (1 hr) south of Thessaloniki; the full circuit runs 8–9 hours — a late all-aboard of 6 pm or later is recommended. The lower Olympus walk is gentle (30–60 min, flat to moderate trail); sturdy shoes advised. Pre-book at least 2 weeks ahead. Confirm all-aboard time with your guide so the return is timed with a buffer.
