Wade ashore on one of Australia's most significant green turtle rookeries — a remote sandbar hosting thousands of nesting turtles. Witnessing this ancient spectacle on a pristine, uninhabited island is a true once-in-a-lifetime encounter.
What to expect
A tender or Zodiac brings you to the brilliant white shoreline, where hawksbill and green turtles haul themselves up the sand in extraordinary numbers. Your expedition naturalist leads a slow, respectful walk along the tideline, pointing out fresh tracks, nest excavations, and hatchling emergence zones. The island's utter silence — broken only by lapping water and the rustle of nesting birds — makes the scale of life here feel almost surreal. You depart with a deep understanding of why this archipelago is one of the Indian Ocean's most important marine sanctuaries.
Good to know
Landings at the Lacepede Islands Nature Reserve require prior contact with DBCA Parks and Wildlife Service Broome (08 9195 5500); there are no entry fees to the reserve itself. The nesting season peaks May–October. Allow 2–3 hours ashore; confirm all-aboard time with your ship before booking. Wear reef shoes and a hat — there is zero shade on the island.
