Join an expert ornithologist on a sanctioned landing to observe one of Australia's largest seabird colonies — over 30,000 pairs of brown boobies, frigatebirds, and terns nesting within metres of your path. For serious birdwatchers, this is an Australian bucket-list pilgrimage.
What to expect
The island's interior dunes are carpeted with nesting brown boobies — so dense that the guide navigates narrow permitted pathways to avoid disturbing nests. Great frigatebirds display their scarlet throat pouches overhead while lesser frigatebirds steal fish mid-air in dramatic aerial piracy. Crested terns line the waterline in massed squadrons. Your ornithologist identifies each species by call as well as sight, building a complete soundscape portrait of the colony. Post-walk, a species checklist is provided as a keepsake.
Good to know
DBCA landing permits are required and numbers are limited — book as early as possible after your itinerary is confirmed. Wear muted colours; flash photography is not permitted. Flat, sandy terrain is easy walking but heat is intense — carry 1.5L of water and wear a broad-brim hat. No entry fee to the reserve; guide fees cover the full experience.
