Slip into crystalline South Pacific waters alongside migrating humpback whales on a private charter — one of the rarest, most profound wildlife encounters on earth. Season runs June–November, perfectly timed for most South Pacific itineraries.
What to expect
Your small group boards a purpose-fitted vessel and motors to the whale grounds south of Tongatapu. When a mother-and-calf pair or escort group is located, your guide slips into the water first and signals you in — snorkels only, no scuba, as required by Tongan law. You hover motionless as 40-tonne humpbacks glide beneath you, their haunting song audible through your mask. Between encounters the crew serves fresh tropical fruit and cold drinks on deck while the naturalist explains the whales' extraordinary annual migration.
Good to know
Available June–November only; confirm port day falls within season before booking. Pre-book as far in advance as possible — legal group limits mean boats sell out weeks ahead. Allow 4–5 hours; check all-aboard time carefully. Bring a rash vest, reef-safe sunscreen, and an underwater camera housing.
