Descend into the luminous Hina Cave sea cavern, then feast on a traditional 'umu earth-oven banquet at Oholei Beach as Tongan performers stage fire dances and ancient lakalaka under the stars. A full-sensory bucket-list evening on Tongatapu's wild east coast.
What to expect
The afternoon begins with a guided wade into Hina Cave, a vast sea cavern where stalactites brush the waterline and shafts of light turn the pool electric blue — your guide shares the Tongan legend of Hina, goddess of the moon, who is said to reside within. You then drive the scenic east coast to Oholei Beach, where long tables are laid under coconut palms for a feast of suckling pig, taro, lu (coconut cream parcels), and fresh tropical fruit cooked Polynesian-style in the earth oven. As darkness falls, drummers and dancers in traditional tapa-cloth costumes perform fire poi and the stately lakalaka court dance — a UNESCO-listed art form. The evening ends beneath a sky blazing with southern stars.
