Meet the Tolai people — the proud, ancient custodians of the Gazelle Peninsula — in a private cultural immersion featuring traditional song, dance, tambu shell money rituals and the awe-inspiring Duk-Duk ceremonial masks. This is living culture at its most powerful and rarely witnessed by outsiders.
What to expect
Your guide — a PNG Tourism-accredited local expert — escorts you to a Tolai village where elders greet you with betel nut and introductions in Kuanua. You witness tambu shell currency exchange, a practice unchanged for centuries, and a vivid performance of traditional bilum weaving and garamut drum rituals. If timing aligns, the extraordinary Duk-Duk masked figures — spiritual emissaries of Tolai law — may appear. A shared village feast of taro, coconut crab and local greens closes the experience.
Good to know
Cultural performances should be arranged a minimum of 48 hours in advance through PNG Tour Guide (phone: +675 7000 9316). Dress modestly — covered shoulders and knees are respectful. Allow 3–4 hours. Photography of the Duk-Duk must be agreed with elders beforehand.
