Descend into the dramatic caldera of Cirque de Cilaos — one of three ancient volcanic craters that crown Réunion's UNESCO-listed interior — on a private guided hike through a landscape of towering basalt walls, waterfalls, and Creole mountain villages.
What to expect
A 4WD vehicle collects you from La Possession (Réunion) cruise port for the winding mountain road into Cilaos, passing through tunnels carved into sheer cliffs. Your guide leads a 3–4 hour hike along crater-rim trails with vertigo-inducing views of the 1,000-metre basalt walls below. You pass through the lentil-farming village of Cilaos for a mid-hike Creole lunch of rougail saucisse and the island's celebrated ti punch. The descent offers a different perspective on the same epic scenery.
Good to know
The drive from port to Cilaos takes ~1.5 hours each way — plan for a full day ashore (8–10 hours). Réunion is a French island; operator communications are in French and English. Wear sturdy hiking shoes and layers (the cirque can be cool and misty). Book private guide directly via the operator at least two weeks in advance.
