Slip into crystal-clear Tongan waters alongside 40-tonne humpback whales on a private, expert-guided encounter. This is the world's premier in-water whale experience — raw, humbling, and utterly bucket-list.
What to expect
Board a purpose-built vessel and scan the deep blue for mother-and-calf pairs resting near the surface. When the guide signals, you slip silently over the side and find yourself eye-to-eye with a 15-metre humpback — a moment of profound stillness. Encounters can last 20–40 minutes per group entry, and the boat repositions repeatedly for multiple swims. Season runs late July through October, coinciding with most South Pacific itineraries.
Good to know
Season is July–October only; book at least 3 months ahead as permits are strictly capped. Nuku'alofa (Tongatapu) or Vava'u are the departure points — confirm your ship's call port. Snorkelling ability required; wetsuits and fins provided. Allow 4–5 hours minimum and confirm all-aboard time before booking.
