Venture beyond the resort strip into authentic Ni-Vanuatu village life with a certified local guide, then cool off in the ethereal electric-blue freshwater pools hidden deep in Efate's jungle — Vanuatu's most compelling cultural-nature pairing.
What to expect
Depart Port Vila by 4WD along red-dirt tracks into the interior, arriving at a traditional nakamal (meeting house) where the chief welcomes you with a kava ceremony — a mild, earthy ritual that underpins all Vanuatu society. Women demonstrate traditional weaving and fire-making; children perform a spirited custom dance. A short jungle walk then descends to the Mele Cascades or Eton Blue Hole: luminous, cold freshwater pools fed by volcanic springs, ringed by ferns and giant banyan roots — perfect for a reviving swim. Return via a roadside lap-lap (root vegetable pudding) tasting.
Good to know
Port Vila is a dock port — taxis from the pier to village trailheads cost approx. USD 5–8 each way. Half-day tour runs 08:00–13:00, comfortably before all-aboard. Bring insect repellent, light hiking shoes, and a swimsuit. Book at least 3 weeks ahead; private groups prioritised.
