Great Barrier Reef: Semi-Submersible Submarine & Underwater Observatory

Descend into the living heart of the Great Barrier Reef without getting wet — a semi-submersible submarine and permanent underwater viewing chamber offer an extraordinary window into one of Earth's greatest ecosystems. Unmissable for non-divers.

What to expect

A high-speed catamaran whisks you from Cairns to a purpose-built pontoon anchored on the Outer Barrier Reef. Drop into the semi-submersible to glide silently through coral canyons and spot reef sharks, rays, and vivid tropical fish through panoramic windows. Then descend to the underwater viewing chamber for a floor-to-ceiling reef panorama at no personal risk. Snorkel directly from the pontoon if you wish, or — the ultimate thrill — parasail 100 metres above the Coral Sea for a seabird's-eye view of the entire reef structure.

Good to know

Departs Cairns — check transfer logistics if your ship calls at a different tender port. The pontoon experience typically runs 5–6 hours including transit. Pre-book the semi-sub and parasailing add-ons as capacity is strictly limited. Reef-safe sunscreen only on the platform — this is enforced by Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority rules.
