Slip into the crystal-clear waters of Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, a protected volcanic crater teeming with Hawaiian green sea turtles, parrotfish, and kaleidoscopic reef. Daily entry is strictly capped — arrive early or miss it entirely.
What to expect
Descend the lush crater rim to a bay so turquoise it looks painted, then wade in among hundreds of tropical fish that show no fear of snorkelers — the entire bay is a protected refuge. Your guide points out resident Hawaiian green sea turtles gliding along the sandy bottom and signals when a hawksbill makes a rare appearance. After 90 minutes in the water, relax on the crescent beach before the crowds peak. The drive back via the scenic Koko Head coastline adds a gorgeous visual finale.
Good to know
Hanauma Bay is closed on Tuesdays and caps daily visitors; early morning (doors open at 6:45 am) is essential. An online reservation and mandatory marine education video are required — your operator handles both. Reef-safe sunscreen only is enforced; the operator will supply it.
