Glide by private boat along Taormina's dramatic coastline to the jewel-like nature reserve of Isola Bella, then duck into the luminous sea caves that glow electric blue beneath the cliffs.
What to expect
Departing from Mazzarò beach (reached in minutes via the Taormina cable car), your wooden gozzo boat hugs the cliffs as the guide points out centuries-old tuna fishing towers and hidden grottoes. At Isola Bella — Taormina's own 'beautiful island' nature reserve — you anchor in aquamarine shallows and snorkel over volcanic rock formations teeming with sea bream and octopus. The Blue Grotto sea cave floods the hull with an eerie cerulean light that photographers go mad for. Prosecco and local pastries are served on the return.
Good to know
The cable car (Funivia di Taormina) runs from Taormina centro down to Mazzarò and takes 5 minutes — buy a return ticket (approx EUR 3.50 each way). Book boat tours in advance in July–August; they sell out fast. Allow 3–4 hours total including cable car time.
