Climb all three medieval sentinel towers that guard La Rochelle's Vieux Port — each with dizzying Atlantic panoramas and centuries of intrigue locked into their stone walls. A trilogy of bucket-list views.
What to expect
The Tour de la Chaîne and Tour Saint-Nicolas once held the great iron chain that sealed the harbour mouth against enemy ships — you can stand on the very ramparts where it was anchored. The Tour de la Lanterne, tallest of the three, served as both lighthouse and prison; graffiti carved by English and Dutch sailors in the 17th century covers the upper chamber walls. Views from the top sweep across the Île de Ré bridge, the Île d'Oléron, and the open Atlantic. Allow 2–3 hours to do all three justice.
Good to know
Towers are open daily; book online to avoid queues. Wear comfortable shoes — stairs are steep and narrow. Located right on the Vieux Port, a short taxi or water-taxi ride from La Pallice cruise terminal.
