Sail out to the legendary Fort Boyard — the 19th-century mid-ocean fortress rising straight from the Atlantic, immortalised by television and centuries of legend. An utterly unique maritime spectacle.
What to expect
You board a purpose-built excursion vessel in La Rochelle's Vieux Port and head out into the open Pertuis d'Antioche — the stretch of Atlantic that separates the mainland from the Île d'Oléron. Fort Boyard looms out of the water like a stone ship, an oval citadel with no harbour, no beach, and no land in sight. Your guide narrates the fort's improbable construction saga (1804–1866), its failed military career, and its cult-TV afterlife. The boat circles the entire structure for 360° photography before returning. A 5-hour version including sailing on a tall ship is also available for an even more immersive experience.
Good to know
Departures from Vieux Port La Rochelle; confirm exact departure point when booking. The 2-hour boat trip fits most port-day schedules; the 5-hour sailing version requires an early start — check all-aboard time carefully. Sea conditions can be choppy; not recommended for severe motion-sickness sufferers.
