Witness cricket reimagined as tribal theatre — chanting, dancing, elaborate costumes, and strategic magic rituals woven into every over. Trobriand Cricket is one of the great living curiosities of the Pacific and an unmissable human spectacle.
What to expect
Trobriand Cricket was born from British colonial-era rules but has been entirely remade by Kiriwina's villages into a flamboyant display of community pride and inter-village rivalry. Teams of up to 40 players per side take the field in elaborate face paint, feathers, and traditional dress, advancing to bat with synchronised war chants. The umpires dance their calls. The bowling actions mime bird flight or warrior strikes. Your guide decodes the layers — the scoring system is designed so the host village always wins, preserving social harmony — and introduces you to players and elders between overs. It is participatory, joyful, and utterly unlike anything else on earth.
Good to know
Matches are not scheduled daily; your guide must liaise with village leaders ahead of your cruise call date to confirm a game will be played. A private arrangement dramatically increases the chance of this being organised for your visit. Bring a quality camera with a telephoto lens — the costumes are extraordinary.
