Meet green sea turtles raised on Kiriwina from hatchling to juvenile in a community-run conservation programme that dramatically improves their survival odds before release into the wild. One of PNG's most quietly remarkable conservation stories.
What to expect
The Reef Zoological centre on Kiriwina raises green sea turtles from hatchling through to approximately five years of age, the critical survival window in the wild. Keepers — local villagers trained in marine biology basics — walk you through the rearing pools, explaining feeding routines, growth tracking, and the eventual release process. You'll be able to observe turtles at multiple stages of development, from tiny juveniles no bigger than your palm to near-release animals of impressive size. The programme is woven into the community's relationship with the sea, and the keepers speak with quiet authority and pride about their work. A genuinely moving, unhurried experience.
Good to know
Visit is best combined with Kaibola Beach or a village tour to make a full-day itinerary. Photography is welcomed and encouraged — your images can support the programme's outreach. Confirm access and opening on your specific cruise-call date with your local guide in advance, as the centre operates on community schedules.
