1238: The Battle of Iceland — Immersive Viking History Experience

Step inside the most dramatic chapter of Icelandic history at this award-winning immersive museum right in Sauðárkrókur. Cinematic staging, Viking armour try-ons, and live narration reconstruct the 1238 civil war battle that shook medieval Iceland.

What to expect

The experience unfolds across dramatic set-piece rooms: a Viking longhouse, a fog-shrouded battlefield, and a hall of clan chieftains. Guides in full period dress lead you through the 1238 Battle of Örlygsstadur, one of the bloodiest clashes in Icelandic history. You can don chainmail and a Viking helmet for photographs. The finale is a short cinematic film that ties the clan rivalries to the eventual Norwegian takeover of Iceland.
