Icelandic Horse Riding on the Skagafjörður Valley Lava Fields

Ride the purest breed of horse on earth through a sweeping volcanic valley framed by glacier-capped mountains. The Icelandic horse's unique tölt gait — silky smooth at speed — makes this a riding experience unlike anywhere else on the planet.

What to expect

The farm is set in the broad Skagafjörður valley with panoramic views of the Tindastóll mountain ridge. Your guide matches you to a horse by temperament and riding ability, then leads you across lava-field pastures and alongside glacial streams. The famous tölt gait — a four-beat lateral pace unique to the breed — lets even novice riders canter comfortably. Private rides can be extended to include a riverside picnic with Icelandic lamb soup and skyr.

Transfer from port is approximately 15–20 minutes; private car hire recommended. Pre-book directly with the farm as capacity is limited. Wear layers and waterproof trousers; helmets and riding boots provided. A 2-hour private ride fits within a comfortable port day.
