Hólar Cathedral & Medieval Bishopric: Private Scholarly Tour

Hólar was Iceland's northern capital and episcopal seat for 700 years — a place of immense cultural and spiritual power. A private expert-led visit to its 12th-century cathedral and surrounding historic campus is one of Iceland's most rarefied cultural experiences.

What to expect

Your guide drives you 40 minutes inland along the Hjaltadalur valley — one of Iceland's most fertile and picturesque — to the ancient episcopal estate of Hólar. The red sandstone cathedral (completed 1763) stands over the foundations of far older Norse and Catholic structures. Inside, the guide reveals the exquisite medieval altarpiece, the oldest bell in Iceland, and the turbulent history of the Reformation here. A short walk takes you to the adjacent agricultural college, which has kept the estate alive as a living community. The drive back traces the valley river past historic turf farms.
