Trek the open tundra ringing Ittoqqortoormiit with an expert local naturalist in search of musk ox herds, Arctic fox, ringed seals, and — with fortune — polar bears along the coastal margins. One of the highest-density musk ox habitats on Earth.
What to expect
Departing on foot from the village edge, you cross cushion-plant tundra dusted with Arctic cotton grass before your guide spots the dark, shaggy silhouettes of musk ox against the hillside — relics of the Pleistocene that have roamed this landscape for 10,000 years. You observe them at close but safe distance, discussing their behaviour and the community's sustainable harvesting traditions. Arctic fox kits may dart between boulders; the guide identifies seabird species wheeling above the sound. The walk back offers sweeping views of the fjord and the candy-coloured houses below.
Good to know
Wear sturdy, waterproof hiking boots and layer for wind. Groups are kept small (max 6–8) for both safety and wildlife ethics. Polar bear sightings are possible — the guide carries the required safety equipment. Confirm departure time allows at least 90 minutes' buffer before all-aboard.
